In addition to the things addressed in the cartoon, teachers should be treated like the professionals they are. Many have earned their master's degree and some even have their doctorate. They should be respected and included in the conversation when legislators consider making new laws that affect education because they have the knowledge and experience concerning education that most legislators lack. If a teacher fails to perform her duties or lacks professionalism, the school administration should deal with him or her personally and immediately, but the actions of a few should not be used to regulate or disrespect the entire profession. Regulations and laws should focus on protecting the state public school system and helping strengthen it by providing the funding needed by all districts in the state to meet all the public school students' needs, lowering class size, paying teachers more so schools can attract and keep well-qualified, experienced teachers, and ensuring mandates to help teachers are written thoughtfully and observed by school districts.
